I feel all glee at the 25 things list since I already refuse to buy those things new and my family thinks I'm nuts. Now I feel all validated by the internet.
I also am amused as I have fake diamonds and real ones and everyone oohs and aahs over the fakes (cause they are really well made) and no one notices the reals (cause well, unless you get one with a billion fancy cuts they just aren't as sparkly) and thus I was cured of the "must have a rock the size of Gibraltar" thing early on.
It was fascinating how people found the things gaudy but then they worked a way around that. We are so...impressionable, the downside of being social mammals.
I'm siding over towards fungible metals (platinum for the win) and non-diamonds (sapphires are pretty). Also...oh god I hate things on my fingers. I hear diamonds are great drill bits though!
I'm either not romantic, or much more romantic, depending on your views of "traditional."
