Very Baltimorey weekend. Yesterday got some great scores in Hampton to include skull books and a suction cup covered Tako. Yes, I practice law, lift weights, buy real estate, sometimes fight like a drunken teenaged redneck...but bought an octo-plushie. What of it.

Today while Janna went to work I walked down to Gold's Gym in the harbor. Only...there no longer is a Gold's Gym at the harbor - just a huge sign where they used to be. Too bad - it was a great space, but it wasn't very full when I was there. This makes the wondering if I should get Janna and I some joint multi-state Gold's Gym membership a much easier decision when there is no Gold's within a mile of her place. I got the great benefit of having walked about a mile and change to get to not-workout, so none of the effort but I'm guilt free! It's the perfect USian workout - I did nothing, but I have an excuse as to why it's not my fault.

Then I spent too much time in Filene's basement. Not sure what I do with the rest of the day - probably cafe and drink drugs while reading and/or writing. Egads it's hot in the city though...stupid pavement.

Shouln't be! I thought you europeans walked all the time everywhere!? Has the UK descended into the "walking is scary, let me get a fake disabled tag to get easier parking" issue USia has?

I don't think anything of a mile walk - it's just a ... mile. Used to walk to school. The only reason I don't do it more is that it takes so much time. I used to walk for exercise, but that was walking 4-10 miles up and down mountains. Oh, and you do get sweaty and gross. Ick. At leasst there it isn't often above 80?

Have I got the wrong idea of how long a mile is? How long does it take you to walk a mile?

Depends. I can walk a mile in about 15 minutes, but as slow as 30 minutes. Running a 10 minute mile is considered a fitness kind of standard. So, that 15 minute walk mile is like NYC walking. Thing is, if you do it in 30 meandering it's really not any kind of workout at all. Neither is standing up (not at attention) for 30 minutes or even waiting tables, for example. In fact, there's a good basis for comparison. Compare an 8 hour shift of waiting tables, which probably involves walking many miles with turns, twists, and things to carry - with walking for 15-30 minutes on city streets. To me, sounds not so hard?
