vicarzThis was the first time I had a depo called on account of weather. I really didn't know what to do - the office was open, but schools were closed. I made it there easily and I'm not a NYer. Over 3 hours and many emails + phone calls later I'm now in Albany for an extra day to do a depo tomorrow. 5 to 8 " of snow and counting (5-8"...I can work with that range, but over that I'm asking you to move on of settle for a hand job). Turns out I can still drive in the snow even in a crappy rental car, though I never went over 40.
So, DC does not go insane in the snow. DC I hear has an ice storm...ice scares these NY folks as much as people down south - you can't drive on ice no matter what your vehicle. Also, DC doesn't get much snow so they hardly have any snow budget or plows. You should see the sight here - there are about 1 out of every 10 vehicles on the road here that are plows, trucks, or construction equipment. Flashing yellow lights abound. All parking lots are being cleared as well - one by a giant caterpillar dozer with a scoop on the front so hoige you could fit 3 hondas in it. Beep beep, flash flash, spin spin...It's like the biggest most unfashionable disco with dandruff issues.
i've seen 2 ultimate jobs.
1) snow mover in GIANT truck in NY parking lot. Oh my god that looks fun - it's nonconsequential work with no exact method or standard applied - so...you get paid to play in a big tonka truck. I think they provide liquor.
2) de-icer sprayer. The truck drives up to the plane and a man in a covered cherry-picker maneuvers around the plane SHOOTING THE SNOW OFF OF IT WITH A REMOTE CONTROLLED GUN!!! It looked like star wars, only instead of lasers and ships it was a pink water jet and snow. When the snow was all blasted (10k points for perfect clearance) they switched the guns to green goo. Sure the environment is being mauled, but the job looked just too fun. I think the next promotion is to imperial walker commander.
Economy up here is really bad. How bad? I was in an Indian restaurant that had a white bus boy. I wonder if the waiters make fun of his accent.
