(no subject)

One odd thing you get about traveling to flyover states and staying in small towns is a perspective on the americhun. I often stay in Hampton Inns, which give free breakfast in front of a tv in the lobby. Usually the tv is left on CNN all the time, but at the morning trough some yahoo always changes it to FOX News. It's like they're preaching, and when I switch it to something literate (like bbc, cnn, or a cartoon) they get all puffy - but never say anything. If they mutter I ask if they mind and they invariably say no, it's fine.

But today with the obama announcement and gay marriage headlines it's downright funny. I look mighty whitey today, all suited and stuff, so they aren't curbing their disdain as they mutter to each other and the FOX tv news about how gays and obamas are ruining the country. When an indian dude showed up, they all got uncomfortably silent...it's like they weren't sure where he stood - and nobody wants a confrontation. One big black dude shows up - the lobby falls silent and half the whiteys leave.

But hey, I'm sure I'm misreading all this. Racial politics have gone the way of the dinosaur in USia.

So, when they assassinate obama and that Hilary chick has a baby or a period or something, McCain will be president and carry on the success that old white men have led USia to for the last 200+ years. I think that's how it all pans out, according to the flyover perspective.

Notice obama not capitalized, Hilary gets capitalized, but McCain is such a hero that he gets two capitals...he's not just president, he's practically god GOD

Not like the US Government is any better. When I was stuck in the US District Court in Raleigh for almost three days the "TV" in the conference room was just a monitor connected to a cable feed that was fixed on Fox News. The entrance floor of the Dept. of Labor has several kiosks set up with monitors facing every direction feeding Fox News to all and sundry.

McCain is such a hero that he gets two capitals...he's not just president, he's practically god GOD

I hear they were roomies in college.

try living in a fly-over state; it's worse.
Some of what you've identified is also partially embedded in agism and generational conflict issues, especially as kids graduate (or drop out of) high school, ditto college, and find that those who have survived layoffs are desperately clinging until they hit the age of fading pension promises. Oh, and tied to this is an incredible class/income schism/guerrilla warfare where "middle class privilege" is the sneer from "working class" kids who have their own iPods, cell phones, and cars. McCain gets props because, oddly enough, being kept as a Vietnamese POW somehow conveys "working class" to these yahoos who miss the fact that he married into the Heinz fortune, and was a friggin' officer and pilot.

Why haven't you gotten a new job yet?

Still hoping to resolve my situation here and return to loving the job I once loved.

That's so familiar it hurts. From bellylaughing.

I like the image of all the gays and obamas running around.

Where are you this time?

I am amused at the thought of you passing among the straight folks, my dear.

The Dem primary has, unfortunately, disavowed me of my optimistic view of Americans and there views on race. To paraphrase a Post reporter the candor with which 1 in 5 Kentuckians said they would not vote for a black man was both refreshing and terrifying. You wish they had the good sense to lie to you.

I'm not going to comment on the politics, but I am going to mention that USA is inside dinosaurs. People will always find a reason to be discriminate because that's the way things have always been & it won't change anytime soon.
