Some of what you've identified is also partially embedded in agism and generational conflict issues, especially as kids graduate (or drop out of) high school, ditto college, and find that those who have survived layoffs are desperately clinging until they hit the age of fading pension promises. Oh, and tied to this is an incredible class/income schism/guerrilla warfare where "middle class privilege" is the sneer from "working class" kids who have their own iPods, cell phones, and cars. McCain gets props because, oddly enough, being kept as a Vietnamese POW somehow conveys "working class" to these yahoos who miss the fact that he married into the Heinz fortune, and was a friggin' officer and pilot.
