Crocs and flipflops are the opposite of fashion shoes. They're designed for comfort and ease of use. Coming in a jillion equally hideous colors and prints doesn't make them any more fashionable than those nurse's scrubs with chilli peppers or balloons all over them.
I think Docs and Uggs were intially designed for practicality too, becoming popular because they were cheap. Then they took on a sort of cult status and became a fashion symbol, same with Chucks and Timberlands.
