Perhaps LJ makes me so pretty that I live on junk food and never grow as a writer? So, like a pretty girl who always has at least 10 guys and 5 girls that give her positive feedback, because she's pretty (they may or may not be sincere - we all want to find value in pretty people), who never grows up or disciplined because they always receive positive affirmation...
(I go off on this tirade a lot)
Perhaps I face the same issue with writing. I don't write, but I LJ post. Perhaps the ability to just blop out my thoughts, firing from the hip, and get positive feedback gives me enough positive feedback that I never grow as a writer and actually create anything.

I also realize my urge to write is more for the reason I'm a horrible parent (of no one). I want to tell everyone what not to do, why, what to do, why, and how...I'm a wreck of a writer. So my urge is to write a self-help book? Ever met someone that reads self-help books? You don't want to help them, and you can't help them. So I'd have to write a story that was interesting to read, but tricks you into the lesson by showing events in such a way that the error is obvious, the solution is obvious.

Oh look, a bird...

Do you care about growing as a writer for your fans? You shouldn't. This is a journal, not some poetry contest.

I care about reaching my potential - and if this handicaps me more than my inate lack of talent...

See, I look upon it as a service to humanity that I never reach my potential. You know, for the same reasons Reed Richards never lets Franklin Richards hit puberty and manifest his mutant powers.

Well, if it's about potential and your audience consists of mostly me-me-me writers (like me!!), you've got to go to another place.

i actually do read self-help books and get a lot out of them!

you can make it more like a manifesto. check out marcus aurelius' "meditations" for an idea of what i am talking about.

i've so totally thought about doing this too.
