So I'm doing a post of the type I mock...passive aggressive indirect attacks!

LJ will notify you when someone adds you as a friend (hooray) but not when someone leaves your LJ (boo). I checked my list lately and found some of the more annoying people on my f-list left mine - hooray! I decided to remove a few people - that I don't know well, whose posts I find annoying or dull (yet frequent) and ditched them. No worries - they don't actually read my LJ, so they won't be offended by this post. I think they just collect names to feel like they have an audience. Another LJ boo - you can't get people to stop being listed as your friend, even when they delete their own LJ entirely. I'm anal (see icon) and wish my list to show symmetry...

LJ did their ban the pedo war...huh. I'm tired of anyone, even a nut-job, being able to have a massive effect on people by yelling "pedo" and having everyone go nuts to cover their ass. This is a typical american problem - LJ isn't important, but the same problem pervades real politics over real issues in this country. Anyone can accuse anyone of being a pedo, terrorist, or drug dealer, and it results in frozen bank accounts (preventing you from getting an attorney), tapped phones, ruined reputations, police seizures (oh, say of the computer that could show the lack of pedo), and all sorts of inconvenience. If you lose your job over charges you prove untrue, you have no recourse. So anyone can call you a pedo, terrorist, drug dealer, or feared-flavor-of-the-week and you're fawked with no recourse. The accuser is immune from prosecution.

So the nut who started the whole LJ pedo thing...dominion xtian, or just another internet troll? Trolls love this sort of controversey - it's entirely possible the whole thing was just another troll flame war, for which they could be beaming with pride now.

I was scolded over coffee lately that LJ is so old (like me) and everyone is using myspace or facebook - duh! I may check out facebook to see if it is less-dumb than myspace, which I lack interest in.

LAW CARP - Day 2 didn't wear me down as much, but I need to buckle down and get more work done. I have to prep a lot of work in advance of the class - my hours are going to be tight until my leave starts. MY GRADES ARE STILL NOT POSTED, INCLUDING THE PASS/FAIL CLASS. GMU-law sucks in terms of consideration of the students as I don't know of another school that hasn't posted grades yet, and they are vital for law geeks. Yes I said carp.

EDIT Oh fuck...that bunghole who caused the whole TB scare wasn't some dumb redneck; he's a 31 year old lawyer. Great, like the profession didn't look bad enough in the eyes of the public already. Of corse he's a PI lawyer. He claims he wasn't told not to travel, and has tapes to prove it. Here's a lawyerly analysis - why would he tape conversations in advance to prove a lack of notification? A - because he knew better. Now I support his personal death penalty.

I tried the Myspace thing....boring. It lacks the interaction that LJ has, but I guess for some people, the lack of actually sitting down, thinking, and writing something is a plus. The only redeeming value I see for myspace is that it did help me reconnect with a few old college and high school friends, but I still prefer LJ by leaps and bounds.

That's my feeling...myspace is for people who blog like MTV - no substance. They put all their pretty pictures up, play music in the background, and try to look special - but cannot write a coherent sentence. Myspace is for illiterate internet users? I think it's also owned by fox.

MySpace - mega corporate (more corporate than LJ) and more a social networking system then a write-and-comment system. Added negative in my mind: the race to "add me" to generate a huge block'o'friends for...ego alone. I created a MyScpae profile b/c I had a few friends who had moved there from LJ, but I don't have the time to maintain more than one blog...and it seemed pretty useless after a short period.

Facebook: initially this was a college-age social networking/hook-up system. Again, as a current student I created a profile. It seems very, very popular (was) among underclassmen and for some degree international students. again--same problem--you have to aggressively rebuild a network and read/comment/post to others.

tribes: I was pushed into this one in order to ferret out the local Michigan scenes. It seems that it would have been more usable on the west cost; pretty wasted for MI or DC that I can see.

End of the day...I figure it is a matter or time before people are using their own PCs as their main webserver and RSS-feeding their blog entries to a range of these networks that have been aggregated within one browser app that maintains a tab for each site. Even then, other than the hyper-social or those who are under-utilized in their jobs and have more time to post, the majority won't truly utilize them at full capacity.

Good points and prediction. LJ seems king of text-based, and my fav for the orderly listing of recent posts. Migration is a bitch...

Let me know about facebook. My son was telling me about it. I have so mush invested in LJ though and it still meets what little needs I am looking for.

I agree with you on the BOLD comments. It is amazing that what people don't realize is that you dont have to worry about the idiots that they have identified, you have to worry about the ones that are still out there. I was reading this book on McCarthyism and some similarities of the onslaught of the period seem to be reforming...

It's a common technique - got the 3rd Reich going too (you don't hear as many comparisons to today's terrorist fear to the pre-ww2 campaigns as you used to). It's not unlike terrorism: It's popular because it works.

call me old-fashioned but I still enjoy reading someone's LJ entries over seeing a buttload of photographs interspersed with captions or trite updates on boring life-stuff (present company excluded). That's just hypocritical but, heh. I like your entries. I'm glad you're suffering through my photo-blogs. I've been boring and silly of late.

These new kids and their new acronyms! Who the fuck knows? I only recently learned "ROFLMAO" supplants "LOL" because my friend bought a Blackberry and she has the time and temperament to identify new acronyms and type the fuckers out.

Is there some sort of list for internet acronyms when people don't spell out sentences?

XOXO! I love your posts! GUSH!!!! Be old! Be a true journaler!!!

also, my dial-up can't download pics so heavy multimedia content just pisses me off.

Exactly. And, frankly, no matter how many posts are made as "give me hugz," venting/ranting, or under-educated semi-political analysis, there is a lot more actual interaction and thoughtful discussion than not. Plus, as Jack mentioned elsewhere, this can be archived. Everything I've seen on the other sites has much more the earmark of "dude I was so trashed--was that ur gurl?" or similar brain-puke.

While I disagree with the response to pressure and recent LJ decisions it remains my primary means of staying in touch with a diverse group of contacts and friends. To do more I'd need to be a best selling author with my own website and blog...which would lose the entire "accidental community" aspect.

I miss a lot of pics as I changed my LJ to not display pictures in my view - it shows placeholders, and if I'm so inclined I look at the pictures. This fixes i) NSFW, ii) slow load times, iii) boring people, iv) fucked up html from poorly posted quiz code, v) quiz results.

Hell, it knocks out most of LJ.

Thank you! I don't find your posts boring...though they make me want to hang out with you, fud up, a drink or two, and ask you "Huh?" :)

I write the way I think and I rarely edit. Since I'm ADD, the entries seem unfocused. Also, over the past five years I've been through five car accidents, several boyfriends, several girlfriends, several huh?s, crazy allergies, many stories, one degree, and three different residences. I befriend everyone I meet and my list of journal-characters seems to grow exponentially.

I'm a very confusing writer online. I'm convinced the only reason people read my entries is out of morbid curiosity. Which is why I've trimmed my friendslist as well. Fuck those voyeurs. Why aren't they posting pics of half-nekkid people at hippy parties?

Quizzes are annoying.

What does NSFW mean????

PS I always look at your pics, sexy thang (so what if I sound 17)

NSFW - not safe for work, ie naked or nearly naked sexual pictures, the kind of thing that many of us could be fired for if they unexpectedly found it on their screen while their boss unexpectedly walked up in front of the monitor (or the security guys archive it and produce it as evidence later of inappropriate computer use)

The Huh isn't a lack of comprehension of your writing, it's more the thought process...cast of characters, for instance. You think someone is gone and *poof* there they are again! You're mad, no you're not, what about that thing, never mind that thing...

From: [identity profile] kuanyin00.livejournal.com
heh... the past and the present are the same to me perceptually. Makes for interesting arguments with friends/family because they are never gone; they're simmered and the issues are often the same so arguments reappear seemingly out of nowhere. Once someone gets inside, they echo. It would be enough to drive me mad but newer people eclipse the old so when of my relationships go Inactive, others are Activated (and the Active ones take up the bulk of the responsibilities).

To put it mildly, I'm kept on a short leash. If I weren't, I'd wander off or I'd go back to Priors.

And it's any wonder that my stories aren't fully resolved??? LOL. I've had to learn how to resolve situations versus characters.

Oh, just be old. Those other sites are less about content, more about flash. :p Me, I'd rather read actual sentences and paragraphs.

Question! If someone falsely accuses you of something yucky, isn't that slander/libel? Or would that not apply because the accuser is purportedly acting in the public interest? I'm ignorant. Teach me!

You're the one who got me thinking about it, but like most everything else it's back-burnered for a couple months.

Oh I don't know! We didn't do that claim in school :)

However, I think that if someone falsely accuses you, it depends on how falsely. If you had anime fashion, and you were identified as a pedo because you had pictures of "children" in your archive - it's probably close enough to reality to get away with it. Or, if you are accused of being a drug trafficer / terrorist (now they're one and the same, thank you W) because people visit your house at night, well they didn't know you weren't dealing drugs - those creeps looked scary and you never go to church! You can stretch almost any facts to allow people to report on one another - we love people who snitch on their neighbors, like like the Germans in WW2.

If they caught saying "I'm going to falsely accuse X of dealing drugs to taint his reputation," you might have a case.

Oh I don't know! We didn't do that claim in school :)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. :) I wasn't trying to question your logic, I just wanted to learn more. So, if I understand you, basically it would be slander if the accusation were false, if the accuser knew it was false, and if the accuser was talking shit about you in order to damage your rep? Close?

I got on myspace cause all the kids are doing it, however I don't use it to blog. LJ is the best blog in my opinion. What I do like myspace for is for finding old friends, and also to keep in touch/make plans with people I don't see on a regular basis.

Also I'm vain and enjoy putting tons of pictures of myself up. :)

I think I signed up for facebook when Krizsa sent me an invite but I never used it and I have forgotten all of my user info. I'll probably try and figure that out at some point because god forbid I don't join every internet social network possible. :)
