Sep. 26th, 2006 05:34 amI am contributing to the noise in the signal. This week is lovely and relaxing, but hardly good post material. I am in a week-long training seminar in GWU. I must say, America is not fat. At least, these kids aren't. So, are they just young, or are the wealthy shaped different? I just think everyone looks edible after being in government buildings for so long.
I'm so happy and relaxed. I really studying hard in the class and finding lots of useful information - the class is mostly attorneys. One obersvation - lots of people go to training not to learn, but to show off to strangers what they know.
They give us lunch in the form of cash cards, which can be used anywhere in GW and most of the surrounding restaurants. I wonder if they can tell at a glance I'm not a college kid. I can tell they are. Lots of girls showing off their breasticles, a few show off their tummies too. Yesterday I had a brownie and mint-chocolate chip sundae mmmmm.
This would be the perfect week to go to alchemy, but covenofwhinyants is playing. Bleagh.

Date: 2006-09-26 11:19 am (UTC)Regarding skinny rich kids - well, their parents can afford to feed them good food. Maybe they have access to more athletic leisure activities that the average person can't afford. OR they can afford the latest image-polishing techniques. Who knows?
In any event, it reminded me that if you're down for a good, novel-length snark, you ought to read Paul Fussel(l?)'s Class.

Of course then my cynical ass will come along and fail you in calc 3 because you can't figure out what a partial derivative is. The circle of life.

Date: 2006-09-27 06:19 am (UTC)Yes. Interestingly, though, in the past 100 years, the shapes have reversed. If you look at photos of, for instance, Appalachian coal-miners form the 1930's, it is striking how thin (in an unhealthy way) they are. We may tend to associate obesity with working-class rural culture today, but it's a new development. And kind of an amazing one, when you think about it. Our society is so rich that even the poor can get fat.

Date: 2006-09-27 12:25 pm (UTC)Sometimes I do fine with crowds and sometimes I do terrible. I'm not sure what makes the change, but I try not to push it too much so I don't have to worry about it.
