I don't think the Catholic stance on evolution is any new thing. The Church has in recent centuries been an important patron of the sciences and intellectual thought in general. I read something about how there was still a strong strain of "bible as symbolism" in the Church when Darwin was publishing, and the idea that "God raised Man from the beasts of the earth" was cool with them.

They still got a long way to go in my book before I am willing to give up the chip on my shoulder, and seeing as how their current pope left the Nazi party because those guys were just too liberal, I don't think that's going to happen for awhile.
