Sep. 13th, 2005 06:35 amWe're only making plans for Nigel
We only want what's best for him
...young Nigel will be happy, happy in his work...
Kind of hard to rant with that song when the work ethic is self-inflicted
In other terrifying news, President Bush now is fighting for the power to make "Pre-emptive nuclear strikes against enemies planning to use weapons of mass destruction." You know, like Iraq. You see, if you strike with nukes first, rather than face the embarrassing predicament of failing to fool everyone after the alleged weapons aren't there - you just claim they were vaporized along with the population you saved from oppression.
First likely target: Iran. Next: N Korea.
See this is lovely because only Congress has the power to declare war. This won't be war, it will simply be giving the President authority to make preemptive nuclear strikes. The Separation of powers will become just another outdated joke as the unified front of right-wing chicken hawks takes full advantage of a public too lazy to educate themselves before voting or taking the time to hold their leaders accountable for their performance after voting.
To be less alarmist, they are talking about making nuclear bunker busters for bases deep underground. To be as non-alarmist as possible, we're talking about preemptive military action. To be realistic, we're talking about limited nuclear weapons in preemptive military strikes without requesting authorization from congress. You imagine for yourself the reaction of other nations to such action. We're giving more free reign to Bush and the button. That shiny, candy-like little button that will silence all the naysayers. That sweet, aluring lil button, red like a clown's nose.

EDIT - a lovely quote from republican Representative Richard Baker on Katrina:
"We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans...we couldn't do it, but God did."
