vicarzIt's easy to dehumanize those who don’t agree with you. Many wars are fought with this weapon, we are us and they are less than us. They are animals. They're savages. We may feed on their meat, and remove them as obstacles to our happiness.
I've learned that however ugly the face body mind of someone, that if I look, I can find something we have in common. There is something beautiful in everyone. I can't not see it anymore, no one is less or more than me - just differing shades and types of beautiful.
It's a mistake to think someone is strong because they lash out at an enemy. Fear is the root of anger, terror of rage. Aggression is an act committed by cowards, more so when it's done after choosing to view opponents as not human. It's not brave to mow down a row of brown people with a machine gun, it's cowardly. It's cowardly to sneak up and slit someone's throat because they're an evil that must be exterminated in the name of your cause.
I'm stronger than them, than those hateful types. I know the people that are in my way, that I am asked to hurt by others or by circumstances. I look at each person, and find that bit we hold in common. I see their outstretched hand even if it lies at their side. I am strong because seeing that beauty in them, and I bring my heel down on their outstretched hand - crushing the flesh into the bone that once bore it. I see their need, and chose mine over theirs - not because they deserve their fulfillment any less than me, but because they are not me. I twist my heel, driving their body into the concrete until it is dust. When the dust scatters, only I will remain.
Every day I crush a little bit of myself into dust. Soon nothing will remain. I am strong.
