Met with Jordan and Scott yesterday, and viewed progress:
* Gas line was dug through the sidewalk (why!?) and will be finished today. Sadly the gas-co.-contracted group gives and doesn't take orders, so now my lawn will have a gas meter in it. Guess where a bush is a-gonna go? Also Jordan had pushed the gas pipes in a surprisingly visual design, but he quickly agreed to run them more hidden.
* We went over railings, spindles, and support structures/transitions and pointed out what to stain and what to paint white
* omfg the kitchen is looking gorgeous. The cabinets are gorgeous, and the light from the doors and windows really shows it off. He suggested cabinets for the bar area, but we decided to go with just a counter-holding-piece and open space. We are also adding a counter and cabinet by the radiator - his treat.
* Counters - still going with granite and agreed to go with his guys (who are the ones I saw in hyattsville, recommended by others already). He offered to do laminate counters because the granite may be 3 weeks, but I agreed (with Scott's prodding) to just tap down some plywood - why waste mats or money.
*Bar - will also a) wrap around the soffit and have another piece of counter for leaning, drinking, display, etc., b) probably have pendants, against Scott's advice, or at least be capped to add them easily, c) will have many power outlets because I think this is the most likely place for people to dump their phones. We're even putting usb plugs there. That said, I also know that's the easiest way to get robbed of portable electronics - less secure as a target, or more secure because if someone broke in, they might just grab and not head upstairs?
* Vent hood is sexah, but doesn't reach the ceiling (it goes out not very high up, but the illusion created by the cover is that it goes way up). I only paid $400 for the vent hood, but the extension is another $100-150, which is insane for a piece of bent metal. I'm fussing over what to do.
The powder room now has a sink - a la Ikea. I'm totally digging it and the room, though we asked him to level the trim on the outside so it looks less like the riddler's lair (the trim was cut even, but the floor is not even and it shows on the frame).
* I nixed a sink proposed in the upstairs bathroom, for while it fit the style and had good counter space, it was so big it nudged up against the toilet. We're going to run with a small 24" sink, probably also from Ikea. Thank you homogeneous euroculture!

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm now set to shop for lights, counters, a vent hood top option
