Sickened by politics
Apr. 28th, 2015 07:18 amLast night I saw the news full of pictures of the "rioting" in b'more, as small groups of thugs looted and set fires because it's fun. Then I had to run door to door, something I said I would not do again, because out of >150 condos in my tiny community, only 10 people had bothered to check the "quorum" box and return their proxy for the annual meeting in the stamped envelope.
Our new board member is the police officer who lives in our community and has for around a decade. He's the guy who just asks people who are drinking in the park to finish up and leaves them alone, who doesn't give a rat's ass about pot, and notes as he walks his rescue dog off the leash that the condo is private property.
I'm not so freaked by looting because there is a part of me that sees the opportunism, that likes chaos, and remembers being a kid that stole stuff. I am, however, sickened by the local apathy on politics generally, from armchair facebook arguments about how the rioters and looters are justified, to the only political discussions being accusations on the right and quoting the far right nutjobs by the left.
Myself included, we care too much about sitting around posturing and putting on airs by how we hold certain opinions, while not actually doing anything for the community. My way the fuck above average involvement in my community amounts to 1-2 hours a month - while 98% of the people can't be bothered to do even that.
I'm discouraged but not forming real conclusions at this point. I don't want to destroy society, but I'd really like a way to ISOLATE myself with a community full of people who contribute to society away from the selfish and apathetic average.
