Shooting: 1) my first thought was "I wonder if he was an EEO filer." No really, not trying to be a dick, but I literally have a case of discrimination claims from someone who was removed from duty because of safety / gun concerns. Nobody on the news mentions that's the grounds for a claim of discrimination on the basis of mental disability. Of course the knee-jerk reaction is to talk about the "obvious" in retrospect risk involved with that particular person with that particular mental disorder (which is a whole 'nuther issue, the lack of finely tuned psyc diagnoses) with firearms in that particular range. I'm not a fan of gun ownership overall, but I do believe in freedom and while we want to protect the public, we don't want everyone who ever called a doctor when they were sad to be prevented from owning ... well things that only have the purpose of killing.
2) Lots of people get therapy, and lots of jobs require security clearances - a danger exists of prejudice against people with mental disabilities (real ones, not my usual fakers) and discourage everyone from getting mental health treatment because it could harm their employment prospects. Ironically this leads to danger as well - less or more I'll leave to someone with the stats - but untreated mental illness is obviously more dangerous than people in treatment. So in defense to a shooting we'll discourage more people from getting treatment.
It's funny how gun nuts talk about guns being a defense against the government. Have they completely missed the evolving reality of that issue while they caress their steel insecurities? The government is currently all over the world subduing people with guns - heck now you can do it with nonlethal force it's so easy. Stun guns and grenades, gasses...any redneck in a bunker can be taken out and the news proves this over and over again. Gun nuts are fighting for the illusion of freedom (while collecting government checks in many cases) they get from the feeling of power that comes from holding a lethal tool in your hands.
