3am local, I got up and drank horrid coffee in the lobby of the Las Vegas hotel, papers in tow. The woman at the desk came out from behind the desk, remote in hand, asking if I wanted to change the channel away from love it or list it / renovation on HGTV to anything else, and of course I told her it was fine. Unfortunately it was too fine, and I found myself unable to read my stack of papers as I watched ceilings pulled down and bedrooms unfold...
Some time later she stopped by again and we got into a conversation about how much we didn't believe the things were "real," as the crisis always seemed to be timed so nicely. She said she had been a realtor for 30 years, and that you always knew what a load bearing wall was, you always new when there were termites - it was so obvious, but on these shows it's always a shocking surprise followed by nail biting drama.
I mentioned my brick and plaster condo, she noted she had a victorian on 5 acres...Me being in attorney mode, I couldn't help but ask how she got stuck here (where she was working graveyard at the desk of a hotel. Her answer made perfect sense though - allergies, in fact this was a move after arizona still bothered her too much (I think she called the desert a prescription).
So "her story checked out, or had surface validity" and I walk away feeling like if someone who sold real estate can get sucked into HGTV porn, then I'm not such a schlupp myself for being sucked in.
But now for work.
