Update to a question nobody asked: for ages I've been saying you can get a permit to carry a concealed gun, but even with the permit you couldn't take it into government buildings, bars, and oddly...churches. However on a whim I looked up the concealed carry statute
http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-308 (part D and later)

Turns out I was right-ish, as the regulation appears somewhere else:

More than just right, nutjob Cuccinelli recently posited that all reasons are good enough reasons to carry a gun in church:
http://cursesfoiledagain2.wordpress.com/2011/04/11/va-attorney-general-rules-on-guns-in-church/ (not an official site, but a decent layperson analysis) (and by layperson I readily admit likely smarter than me)

It's particularly fascinating that this AG opinion addresses application of the law, but the law remains on the books. What a weird fucking state...I mean commonwealth.

Odder too is that this concealed permit actually only allows, by the letter of the law, a handgun. If I foolishly conceal carry nunchucks, this may not comply with the law! Would you prefer my borderline self kept a shoulder holstered firearm or spinny sticks? Think someone didn't think that whole thing through? Think the NRA wrote the law and they don't give a rat's ass about rights generally?
