Jul. 9th, 2009 07:38 amGrog. Went to Busch Gardens yesterday. It's worth speeding past Kings Dominion - the park is really nice, the quality of the people was yarns above the ghetto/trailer parks of KD, and the fact they actually had educational programs including wildlife conservation made it that much better.
To my shock I found myself terrified of a roller coaster. When we parked, we were by a purple roller coaster. We just had to ride that first, well, because it was purple. That was Apollo's chariot, and I got on eagerly. However, when sitting on the top of that first big hill as we started to plunge straight down, I thought I was going to die - could not hold on to anything tight enough to the degree I think I was trying to grip the seat with my sphincter. After the drop I was ok but I was a little freaked by the fear. So, the rest of the day I kept hopping on coasters but I was facing more quivers waiting to ride. We did the Wolf but that was not scary, but the scary pause-on-top Griffon was interesting. We went on that one 2-3 times, first in the first car, then in the middle to save time. That shit was terrifying but I never got that first fear feeling like I did on the first purple ride. Weird. However, after finding fear I just wanted to keep beating it down and shouting fuckyou back at it. At the end of the day we took a final round at the purple Apollo, but I found no fear on it by the end of the day.
The oddest thing on the Apollo ride was that some bigger people had to get off of it. Your seat was but-shaped, and some people either didn't fit in the butt-shape or when in it couldn't lower the brace enough to be safe. When we rode, a girl was with her dad - then dad couldn't ride with her anymore because he was too big to be on the ride. Janna and I talked to her so she wouldn't be "alone" and at the end told Dad she was brave. We saw a few more people booted who didn't really appear that fat (for USians). There was no warning at the front gate or anything. I guess there was the possibility that for some people who were sliding out of shape that this would be the wake-up call that set them off - but I really just found it odd.
The other surprise was that the 4-d Metalocalpse-like Kurse of Darkastle was shockingly good. We waited longer in that line than any other, but even with the very cheap 3-d glasses on the effects were really good. Janna nearly slapped me for trying to pet all the snakes and things "thrown at us." Neat!
So a Sunny Wed in the middle of the summer was a perfect park day. It wasn't too hot, the crowds were reasonable, and we never waited more than 30 minutes for a ride (usually much less).
