As it is time for NY resolutions, and I don't do them but am hearing about all of yours - I thought I'd explain how I got to be "this way." There seems to be a misconception that I'm super-disciplined and have been a big hairy beer jock all my life. It's as though the pot-bellied skinny-armed crossdresser with long hair years are all but forgotten - as though I pulled off the makeup and dresses with my beefy arms and boobs. Or, people assume I'm just "disciplined" as though I possess an unusual character trait that they somehow lack.

NO. I was not made this way. You are not made differently. I made this slowly, with many mistakes, over time. I think I'm going to take a quick moment to rehash my history of my workout program, maybe even education, for the sake of trying to demonstrate that what I do - YOU CAN DO. I'm not that different - not smart, strong, rich - I didn't have much to start with, it's just that if you keep trying slowly over time you will improve. Perhaps knowing my history will stop people from writing me off as so different from themselves that they can't aspire to the things I achieve. I show off what I do because the real message is that if José can do it, anyone can.

How I got this way:  )

SO - that's how I got here. Dull, but the general thing I see running through my history is that a) I wasn't really motivated, b) I got lucky and just stumbled into situations in which I happened to have needs that were satisfied by working out in different ways. I had help. Now I'm trying to help others (but generally failing). I think my next lesson will be how to teach what I've learned - not the how to lift, but how to motivate.

I might explain about my scholastic exploits later. They also fit a pattern of just stumbling into things rather than being the directed disciplined maniac people seem to mistake me for.
