From Steve: http://www.slate.com/id/2099203/ (no comments?) discusses the FBI profile of the Columbine guys, saying rather than social politics and HS stereotypes, it was simply led by a psychopath. To demonstrate, they quote the guy saying lots of hateful things, and note he had a superiority complex. I worry as I read the thing that they utterly miss the point. Everyone who gets picked on has a superiorty complex - you have to trash the people that trash you or you'll feel awful about yourself. The quotes they give to prove he was psycho are par for the course with kids on the internet. They note that the attack was supposed to kill far more people - only their incompetence with bomb-making prevented hundreds for being killed. These are the experts allegedly, but I'm hardly convinced from this tiny article. Do I care enough or have the time to peruse the actual study and report? Oh no.
Walked down to a bridge last night and watched the bommidy-boom-boom. Well, first we saw and heard the oncoming storm. We sat outside on the steps and watched it roll in, quickly realizing that with the winds and torrents that our shelter wasn't keeping us too dry. We laughed and kissed in the rain, chaos all around. Later we watched the fireworks over the city. The crowd was surpringly nice and polite. We realized they were screening people on their way into Iwo Jima, but many of us just walked around the fences. Once again, only the lawful are screened? The fireworks were neat - some now just sort of make giant flaming flowers of flaming mist. Others drew pictures in the sky. I held her in my arms. I can't remember a better 4th.
The hike on Sunday - looks like we're leaving 8:15 from Murky coffee (which opens at 8 according to their website). Looks like we'll probably go to the Shanendoah valley.
