Nov. 5th, 2004 07:08 amI would love to whine about the election.
I vote against my interest. I work for the government and own property in the DC metro area, so republican big government benefits me. I make about 80k, so tax breaks benefit me. I own stocks, so capital gains cuts help me. I am going to die in less than 100 years, so the environment does not affect me in my lifetime. Short-sighted environmental policy benefits me. I am too old to serve in the military, and use oil, so the war might someday benefit me. I look sound and act white, so racism helps me. I'm not a woman and can't get pregnant, so abortion doesn't affect me. I have a clean past and can pass a drug test, so restrictive social policies benefit me. I don't mind my privacy being violated, so invasive searches don't bother me. I have everything to gain from the republican congress despite their socially conservative policies, because their short-sighted fiscal liberalism benefits me directly.
Unfortunately, unlike the average christian voter, I care about these things that affect the world around me. I'm not willing to give up american values - the real ones - out of fear. I'm not going to screw over my fellow americans for my own benefit. I'm more christian than CHRISTians, for I do the right thing not out of fear or hope for reward, but because I believe it is morally right. I vote for things that benefit the country as a whole, not just myself. I don't change my morality to fit my selfish desires. I wish I was not unusual in that regard.
That bullshit aside, I'm actually too busy to whine (I write fast). Today I interview for a non-supervisory GS-14 at 9am, then I do a pre-hearing conference at noon, and I'm doing oral arguments on two legal issues for both sides tonight from 6-7:40 or so. Then I'll be doing the week's homework because these special projects have put me behind in my day-to-day work.
I work pretty fucking hard, and sacrifice a lot.
