I’m enjoying the difference between myself and a lot of the law school - self-confidence. People panic about what they don’t know and understand, people cling to people that dress exactly the same, career-bound neurotics, the ‘please like me’ dance they give to the interviewers is hilarious. I make fun of the ass-sucking, fully acknowledging the possibility that I may engage in said dance in the next few years myself. For now, I’m insulated.

How to make it in law school )

Law school vs job )

We talked about the value of human life in “Economic foundations of law.” My very conservative economics teacher...well isn’t. I like conservative views from rational people - perhaps that’s the direction I’m heading in myself. We don’t often take money for death, but we will face a certain % chance of death for money. I am all for equating human life with a dollar amount, I just disagree with the figure. 55 doesn’t save shit.

My hippie thought today is the SUV, nothing surprising there. I just want someone driving for relaxation, hauling down the asphalt in their status-SUV, to think about that 19 year old guy from New Jersey who was killed when a bomb went off next to his truck. I want him to think about how the soldier’s buddies had to clean up while the locals shouted cheers and held up pieces of twisted metal, hopping and dancing to celebrate the death of one of the American enemies.

I’m not elevating myself above the above scenario, not by much. We know what buying gas supports, plain and simple. I know I can take the metro to my school, so the fact that I drive a stick shift Honda instead of a ford megabox only lessens use that isn’t necessary. When you hurt someone with your car, notice they will judge negligence by how fast you were going, whether you wore a seatbelt, how well your car was maintained, what you were doing when the crash occurred...many aspects of safety - but they will never address the trip itself. Were you going to work? Renting a DVD? Cheating on your wife? Taking your sick mother to the hospital? Getting groceries? The gym? A bar? Driving to blow off steam? The necessity of the trip is not an issue.
