Last night I knew I was too bushed and apathetic to think about alchemy. Sp00ky will have to go on w/o me this year. Even though I’m taking the next week off, I might skip parties and clubs entirely. I’m becoming more concerned about my grades and school that other activities. In that vein, I sat after class last night and attended a basic 1L career workshop.

A few recent grads spoke to us about their experiences, one geek who works on the hill (by geek I mean, geek. Really geeky), one directionless slacker (day students - those of us with jobs can spot them a mile away), Ms. Anoying Fucking Overachiever Twat Witherspoon (complete with pink sans poodle), and a human being.

Twat caught most of my attention. She had done everything, moot, review, good grades, worked at a firm full-time while in school - and topped off her vitae by saying “What can I say, I guess I pretty much did it all!” The words “Die bitch” were so close to rolling off my tongue! She topped off her annoying self with a southern drawl....ew...BUT, I’m the new happy José! I think happy thoughts! I don’t judge people that make my gag reflex activate right away! Whee!

Listening to the rest of the program, I had the idea that you have to pursue a legal job a year before you graduate reinforced. I also received the word from several recent working grads that life does indeed improve significantly after your first year, which was very welcome news. I've been worrying that since I've already been to grad school, that I might not find this easier since I've already learned how to balance work and school in the past. I can tell I’m going to make it through this first year, taxing though it is. They also gave tips on how you can do extra-curriculars, and noted that you really won’t do anything but survive with the best grades you can in 1L as a working stiff. Good news.

As for Miss. Twat, to my surprise her over-achieving machine-tanned country-accented blonde butt chose to work for a small to mid-sized firm long in advance of graduation. I decided to overcome the pink nausea and approach her after the lecture. She turned out to be very nice and personable, and pointed out that money was not her driving force before I even had a chance to ask. I found our priorities were highly parallel, in fact much of our experience was. I liked talking to her, and while what I learned was probably more reinforcing things I’ve heard than picking up new material, it was very helpful to me. She had a lot of good suggestions about how to go the extra mile on paper without killing yourself, and realistic expectations as to hours worked vs. available. Shortcuts matter. Experiences in which I hold in my judgments and stay open despite my initial impression = Previous positive experiences +1.

I then spoke to the person who was proud to be working for Alexandria, and realized she makes less than I do now. Money isn’t everything, but I have a job I like that pays pretty well.

There must be a point in here somewhere. Nope, that’s it. Just fluff.
