I am king of the (sniff) mole people

In a more distant friend's fb ran into good old fashioned ribbing about "short people suck," and overtly stated preferences for height. It's not a protected class, but really? I am US cultured enough that I genuinely think you should not have preferences for things people cannot control. Maybe I've just fallen for the myth perpetuated by the rich who have every advantage and then get the poor to blame themselves. I mean the short.

Inexplicably I'm sick again - 2nd time in a row. I thought after getting sick I was over it - so safe I could lick handrails in public transportation. But no, I'm fighting some sinus crap. Allergies? Whatever it is I'm exhausted, coughing until wheezing, waking up (coughing), and sore (from...youguessedit).

That said, I dragged my sorry carcass to the gym today and set a personal record. It's a good and bad record - I DL 425 for 2, which means it isn't my max. It also means I'm still not quite there with my form, but I'm working on it. I'm trying to learn to engage my hammys without doing this romanian dance on the way down to the bar.

Sick or no, I've passed a personal 1k. If we count 425 DL, 345 Sq, and my meh bench of 235...I'm at 1005. That's one goal reached.

But I'm still short so I guess it don't mean nuffin.

(not really sad - just making a scene and pissed off about being sick right now)

If you'd stop compressing yourself with all the heavy weights...just sayin'

It's true - I was 6' 1" before I started squatting. Now I'm like a character from Phantasm.

"I genuinely think you should not have preferences for things people cannot control"

Surely you're not serious? You think people CHOOSE their preferences?

I agree it's a bit insensitive to go on about a tall preference in the presence of a short person, just as it's a bit insensitive for so many of the blokes I know to go on about "boobs" in my presence, but them's the breaks really. People ARE entitled to prefer tall men, or busty women, or whatever. I just remind myself about the disconnect between words and actions. Pretty much everyone may SAY they like boobs, but in reality, I've had no shortage of suitors, so their stated preference doesn't necessarily line up with what or who they're happy with in reality. Also bear in mind that a preference is an "all other things being equal" thing. In reality all things are NOT equal; I wouldn't have the choice of dating a 5'4" José or a 5'10" José, my only choice is to date you or not date you, based on ALL of your qualities as a whole person. Some people will let a preference be a dealbreaker, but lots won't.

Oh! And I've just caught you in a hypocrisy, as YOU prefer women with smaller boobs, which they can't really control. So you see.

[identity profile] vicar.livejournal.com 2015-12-24 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Guilty - I..justify it by noting it's a preference in contrast with the more normal one, but it is hypocritical.

I was thinking about this recently. If your preference is for something that's not generally preferred, that's considered somehow virtuous and you're allowed to go around proclaiming "I like a woman with some meat on her bones" or "More than a handful's a waste." If your preference does line up with what society generally deems attractive, holding that preference makes you "shallow." It's a double standard.

Good point!

i mean... there is always surgery.

[identity profile] vicar.livejournal.com 2015-12-26 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
They usually say that for bigger and I don't have the water balloon fetish. Perhaps I have a real fetish.

Mmm boobs. Heck I like mine! Wait, is that also hypocritical?

[identity profile] djpsyche.livejournal.com 2015-12-28 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hence the "really".

But seriously? You'd advocate *surgery* just to make yourself more attractive to a subset of individuals? What happened if your next partner preferred larger boobs? Get 'em put back?

Dear god no. Nope.

sorry, sarcasm doesn't translate well. though I've actually long considered surgery, just because it would be nice to have less shoulder/neck pain. but I'm pretty avoidant of anything surgery, so haven't actually pulled the trigger. a friend did, and then got a staph infection, so I think I'm still ok with my decision. otoh, she's still good with her decision, so who knows.

Sadly I had a friend who did lessbooburgery; they wouldn't operate until she lost weight to ensure she wasn't just fat. She lost the weight, got lessboob, and then gained so much weight she got her boobs back and more.

Yeah that's a complicating factor. There is no reason to get more, but many reasons to get less.

Honestly, yes. We control what we can and don't what we don't. But I like your point about words and actions.

I'm a pretty strong example of having loudly stated preferences which I "violate" all the time. Hmm.

Now about penis size...
