vicarzSo the estimate for body work on my poor little Honda was $1500 or more, and the body guy recommended just doing the insurance. I texted my neighbor and he said a) it was his b’day, and b) he’d text me yesterday morning about filing with insurance. I wished him happy bday but didn’t get a text. I texted him this AM and he said he’s filing today and will email me the Geico claim #.
I realize I put myself at risk - if he protests it’s almost a week later and I never had any proof it was him other than witnessing circumstantial evidence but not the event. I am not sure how long I would have to file with my insurance, and I think my deductible may be...large when it comes to comprehensive (though I nearly cancelled it because the car is so old - so I may have gotten lucky with a statistically bad choice.
If he doesn’t follow through I might be able to try small claims court, and the texts are pretty good evidence I am guessing. From the way he’s being up front I think it’s far more likely he’ll file as he says he will - the texts would make it hard to deny he took responsibility, but it’s not 100%.
I wonder if he was buzzed or drunk when he hit my car - it would explain pretty much everything, though I didn’t smell alcohol or see him stagger. But why else would you pretend you didn’t hit a car with the alarm going off, and leave your lights on as you dash inside? If he was drinking, that would be why he’d bolt - the stakes are far higher than just an “oops” insurance claim. So that would fit if now he’s happy to be responsible since there is no way to prove whether he was drinking.
I think my car may be totaled, and I was just about to do the timing belt and some other small things so...wouldn’t be a bad time to part ways if that’s what is going to happen. Then the question is whether I get something like a Honda fit - which has amazing cargo space (Janna’s car is awesome) or actually buy a pickup truck / beater for short term as I furnish my house. Well, if I’m ever able to furnish my house.
