Travel requests: Know any places that are cheesy warm places to visit in the winter, this or close time zones, that aren't insanely expensive? Also, ability to eat at nearby restaurants and regular store access (as opposed to being stuck on a resort nearly as confining as a cruise)?

Interesting idea! I was thinking more Virgin Islands, PR, white sand blue water stuff. However, that's really not a bad idea at all.

New Orleans? Puerto Rico? Costa Rica? Bolivia? I haven't been to the last 3 so I have no idea what the costs are like but people seem happy when they go there.

Costa Rica is where one former roommate had said was the first time he'd finally tasted what a true tree-ripened banana tasted like (he loved all the fruit he had there). And Bolivia can be really inexpensive. I think the more expensive steak dinner they had there at the 'fancy' place was something like $10 a person.
