I'm pretty sure he created a self-fulfilling prophecy of incompetence when it came to relationships. It made him something special... the one guy in the whole wide world who couldn't get a good woman. And, by his own description of his family life, he was never anyone special there.
He very easily blew off any attempts anyone else seem to have made to reach out to him--he did have some dates, got invited to parties, was commended on good work he did at the office. His isolation was self-propagated.
He wanted so desperately to be special. Sadly, he chose to do it in the most self-destructive way possible.
The real telling sign, for me at least, is how it all ended. When the real gung-ho kill'emall bombastic mass killers would be blazenly taking their shots at the surprised crowds and staring stoically for the cameras, he turned off the lights. What some would consider his most glorious moment--the culmination of many months of planning and much hard work--was obscured not just from those present, but from himself as well... in the dark.
