I feel for you. We had similar beasts when we moved in here. The first pest removal company we hired didn't seem to make any dent, though, Orkin, which is of course more expensive, has seemed to have an impact after a year or so of periodic treatments. Arlington, according to Orkin, is bad as far as pests go -- I'm guessing it has to do with proximity to DC and the river.
The big reddish/brown roaches are, I think, american cockroaches. They do fly, and can come in off of trees and such. We've been told they like cardboard and such. FWIW: http://www.pestproducts.com/american.htm
