This AM I ordered a computer that outpaces my current computer by a long shot, only for 1/8 to 1/4 the cost. Now, it's been 7 years, but my hypersonic is about 2ghz cpu, 1 meg ram, 80gb HD, 64 meg video card, dvd drive and cd r/w drive, XP, I think the only nice thing on it is the soundblaster card. It was about 2k.
New dell, refurbished: intel dual-core 2.0 ghz, 1 MB DDR2 NON-ECC SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)(first thing I'll be upgrading as soon as I learn which to buy), 1 cd/dvd r/w drive, 256 meg radeon graphics cards with dvi/tv-out, vista premium, 250 gb hd, 13/1 memory card reader...$300 with shipping.
Even for now that it seems awfully cheap. I just noticed my computer is shutting down differently than it used to, and I'm not about to move my new tv/tivo computer into the other room so...I'm sure it's worth the price, and if not (i.e. it won't run diablo 3 or SC 2) then I'll just upgrade it or resell it for a loss - it's not much money so I'm not terrified. Now the laptop that I have to get so I can game with Steve in nightclubs...that'll cost more ;P

i stripped as much as i could out of it per all the online articles about reducing vista's bloatware and i just wouldn't speed up.
i intended it to be a media pc and record tv/watch tv through it. i even had a cable card installed, and it skipped and stuttered and recorded shitty video.
all this may be attributable to the crappy nvidia 256meg video card, but i think not.
*shrug*
i'll stick with XP for now.

Vista does a lot of automatic non-user adjustable crap, conceded.
I have got my media center to run smoothly - oddly by disconnecting the wireless network. Sigh.
