This AM I ordered a computer that outpaces my current computer by a long shot, only for 1/8 to 1/4 the cost. Now, it's been 7 years, but my hypersonic is about 2ghz cpu, 1 meg ram, 80gb HD, 64 meg video card, dvd drive and cd r/w drive, XP, I think the only nice thing on it is the soundblaster card. It was about 2k.

New dell, refurbished: intel dual-core 2.0 ghz, 1 MB DDR2 NON-ECC SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)(first thing I'll be upgrading as soon as I learn which to buy), 1 cd/dvd r/w drive, 256 meg radeon graphics cards with dvi/tv-out, vista premium, 250 gb hd, 13/1 memory card reader...$300 with shipping.

Even for now that it seems awfully cheap. I just noticed my computer is shutting down differently than it used to, and I'm not about to move my new tv/tivo computer into the other room so...I'm sure it's worth the price, and if not (i.e. it won't run diablo 3 or SC 2) then I'll just upgrade it or resell it for a loss - it's not much money so I'm not terrified. Now the laptop that I have to get so I can game with Steve in nightclubs...that'll cost more ;P

I run vista on my computer in the tv room - seems to work just fine (granted it has 3 megs ram). What problems did you have?

it was just impossibly slow. 2x 2ghz processor and 3 gigs of high speed ram, and it was nowhere near the speed of my xp laptop with 1 x 2.5 processor and 2 gigs of ram.

i stripped as much as i could out of it per all the online articles about reducing vista's bloatware and i just wouldn't speed up.

i intended it to be a media pc and record tv/watch tv through it. i even had a cable card installed, and it skipped and stuttered and recorded shitty video.

all this may be attributable to the crappy nvidia 256meg video card, but i think not.

*shrug*

i'll stick with XP for now.

For the record I've failed to get vista to once, just once, get the "ez transfer" to work either via network or now via my spiffy new 8g flash drive.

Vista does a lot of automatic non-user adjustable crap, conceded.

I have got my media center to run smoothly - oddly by disconnecting the wireless network. Sigh.
