The "boy lovers" quip was aimed at the Athenians, fellow greeks, not at the Persians. It was pretty tongue in cheek as well. Most if not all of the greeks were boy lovers. Heracles and Apollo each had a boy toy. They had no problem with it as long as the man was the pitcher and the boy was the catcher.

It's defnitely an easy movie to politicize, but only because it's very idealistic and displays virtues many would like to claim. Then again, both sides tried to politicize Team America as their movie, so whatever.
