People like that are maddening. Go, or don't go, but don't wreck for the rest of us. I'm glad you got to go back and enjoy it properly.
I used to go with friends to these things called M-Mart and Q-Mart (in Montgomery and Quakertown, Penna., respectively) which were like big, permanent indoor flea markets. I don't know how else to describe them. But they had tons of wonderful schlock like black velvet paintings of Elvis that cry on the quarter-hour (not really, but wanted to give you a visual). I'm sure now there are Billy the Dancing Fish available in abundance and--yes--Confederate everything. I haven't been there in years but I'm told they are still around (and probably haven't changed much... maybe there's an ATM now).
There always seemed to be a thread of goth and punk in that area (not sure how far west you were but I'm talking the Allentown-to-Reading swatch).
